flooding 洪水泛濫
flooding是表示淹水的名詞用法，意指雨水或河（湖）水淹沒了陸地。在醫學用語上，則是指產後大出血。flooding源於flood這個字，flash flood是指突如其來的水災。
新聞這樣說：
Taiwan is bracing itself for Typhoon Matmo strike on Tuesday night, giving damaging gusts of wind, torrential rain and a storm surge at the coast. In preparation for the storm, the Taiwanese military is collecting and distributing sandbags to guard against the expected flooding.

landslide 土石流
slide有「滑動」的意思，landslide 則是指土石滑落、坍方，也就是土石流，在政治用語中，還可表示某人或某方陣營在選舉中獲得大多數的民意支持。相似的字還有mudslide（山崩；泥流） avalanche（雪崩）。
新聞這樣說：
A driver had a lucky escape after a boulder narrowly missed a car in a sudden landslide caused by heavy rain in Taiwan. The incident was captured by a dashboard camera on another vehicle travelling along the coastal road in the north of the country.

make landfall 登陸
登陸為氣象學（meteorology）用語，意思是指在海上形成的颱風眼（eye）越過海岸線（coastline）。相關的用語包括：發布海陸上颱風警報（issue a sea/land warning）、解除颱風警報（lift the warning for the typhoon）。
新聞這樣說：
Typhoon Noul is brushing Taiwan's east coast and will not make landfall, officials say. However, school and work was suspended for residents in outlying islands, as a precaution.
官方指出掃過台灣的紅霞颱風將不會登陸，只會掃過台灣東海岸。然而為了安全起見，偏遠地區的的離島學校及公司仍停班停課。
